Chainguard

Bicycles with a single front chainring and a single rear cog are equipped with a chainguard to prevent contact with the chain. Read the Warning About Mechanical Work before performing any service work on your bicycle.

Inspection

The chainguard should be aligned so that it does not rub on the chain, crankset, or rear wheel. The attachment of the chainguard to the bicycle must be tight so that the chainguard stays in position. Once a month, check that the chainguard is firmly attached and correctly aligned. Push the chainguard side-to-side, and tap on it. Lift the rear wheel off the ground and rotate the crankarms, and listen for any sounds which might indicate the crank or chain is rubbing on the chainguard. Re-align the chainguard so that it does not move, rattle, or rub, and tighten the attachment hardware.

Adjustment

A chainguard may be attached by brackets with clamps, or straight to the frame.

If the bracket has a clamp, loosen the fastener and rotate the clamp on the frame to position the chainguard.

If there is no clamp, you may slightly bend the bracket to achieve the correct alignment.
