Fuel EX

This system connects the swingarm to the mainframe with a short rocker linkage (Figure 1).

Inspection

After every 10 hours of use inspect the shock mounting bolts and the pivot bolts for tightness. Remove the nut from the bolt or axle, clean the threads thoroughly, and apply a thread-locking compound (Loctite 242 is excellent). Tighten the bolts to the torque specifications.

Once a month check for  wear of the pivot bearings of the swingarm. Place one hand on top of the rear tire, and grasp the seatpost with the other. Try to move the rear wheel from side to side, and the seatpost up and down. If you hear or feel any looseness, take the bicycle to your Trek dealer for service.

Also check the ABP (Active Braking Pivot) pivot bearings (Figure 2). Tighten the nut to the torque specifications or take your bicycle to your dealer for service.

Adjustment

Your shock owner's manual tells you how to adjust the rear shock for most bicycle designs. This information makes tuning suggestions specifically for the Fuel EX. Find the correct pressures for the starting sag in the chart below, then try increments of 5 to 10PSI (0.25 to 0.5ATM).

Lubrication

No lubrication is required for the shock or the pivot of your Trek rear suspension bicycle. Avoid all lubricants as they may damage the cartridge or composite bearings. For best results and long life, simply wash the shock and pivot area with a solution of soap and water, or just water.
