Chapter 3: inspection, adjustment, and lubrication

Opening a cantilever brake

An open brake allows the tire to pass the brake pads during installation or removal of a wheel. Opening and closing the brake is not the same as adjusting the distance from the pads to the rim.

Never ride with the brake in the open position; the loose brake arms or cable could interfere with the wheel, causing you to lose control and fall.

Squeeze the brake pads firmly against the rim. With the other hand, pull the leaded end of the linkwire from the retaining fork on the brake arm. Release the brake pads, and the brake will open.
To close the brake, reverse the instructions.
