Chapter 3: inspection, adjustment, and lubrication

Opening direct-pull brakes

An open brake allows the tire to pass the brake pads during installation or removal of a wheel. Opening and closing the brake is not the same as adjusting the distance from the pads to the rim.

Never ride with the brake in the open position; the loose brake arms could interfere with the wheel, causing you to lose control and fall.

Disconnect the pipe from the link arm (Figure 1). With one hand, squeeze the pads firmly against the rim. With the other hand, pull the pipe back from the link arm, and lift the pipe. Once disconnected, let go of the brake pads and the brake will open.

To close the brake, reverse the instructions. Make sure the pipe is completely engaged in the link, and slide the rubber boot over the pipe end to prevent dirt from getting on the cable.
