Inspection

Once a month check that the cassette is clean, free of rust, and properly oiled. Take off the rear wheel, and rotate the cassette in your hands. If you hear a grinding noise or your cassette stops immediately after spinning it, the cassette may need adjustment or replacement; take your bicycle to your Trek dealer for service.

Every 3 months check that the cassette or rear cog is tight. Attempt to move the largest cassette cog or rear cog from side to side. If there is any movement, tighten to the torque specifications.

Adjustment

Adjustment of the bearings in the cassette requires special tools and training. These services should only be performed by your Trek dealer.

Lubrication and cleaning

Once a month clean the cassette.

To clean the cassette

Remove the surface dirt around the cog teeth with a degreaser or a similar solvent, and a brush. Do not use gasoline; it's too flammable and leaves a grease-contaminating film after evaporating.

Many solvents can damage the wheel bearings or the finish of your bicycle. Always remove the cassette from the wheel before cleaning.
