These instructions explain how to replace a cable. After you have installed the cable, refer to the adjustment section for the type of shift system on your bicycle (3-speed, Nexus, etc.). Read the Warning About Mechanical Work before performing any service work on your bicycle.
For bicycles with 3-speed internal shifting, begin by removing the bell crank cover set screw, remove the cover, and loosen the cable fixing bolt (Figure 1).
For Nexus bicycles, begin by loosening the cable fixing bolt, remove the phillips head screw holding the cable-end cover, and slide the cable-end cover forward.
1. Note the path the cable follows, loosen the cable clamp bolt holding the cable, and remove the cable through the shift lever.
Some shifters have a covered cable access: either a screw, or a cover held by a screw. If you can't find the cable access for your shifter, check with your dealer.
2. Inspect the housings; if they are damaged or rusty, replace them.
Note: If you replace any housings, make sure the pieces are of the correct type of housing, and cut them to the proper length (use the old pieces as guides). Make sure the housing ends are free of burrs; the cable should pass freely through these ends.
3. Grease the new cable and feed it through the lever and all of the cable guides and housings, and the cable clamp bolt following the same path as the old cable. Re-attach the cover.
4. Cut the cable so no more than 2 inches (51 mm) of cable length extends beyond the cable clamp bolt.
5. Crimp on a metal end-cap to prevent fraying of the cable end, or apply some solder to the end of the cable.
6. Follow the directions for adjustment.
