Rack or basket

Some bicycles are equipped with a rack for carrying panniers (side bags), cargo, and other supplies. Read the Warning about Mechanical Work before performing any service work on your bicycle.

Other bicycles are equipped with a basket. If you attach supplies or cargo to the rack or basket, do not overload the bicycle. The maximum weight for a rack or basket should be marked on the rack basket. These are the usual weight limits:

· Front, above the wheel: 22 pounds (10 kg)

· Front, below the top of the wheel: 40 pounds (18 kg)

· Rear: 55 lbs (25 kg)

However, placing all the cargo on only the back of the bicycle is not recommended. Any bicycle will ride better if the load is distributed between the front and rear of the bicycle. Also, bicycles have weight limits according to their use and design, so don't overload the bicycle.

Warning—Attaching anything to the handlebar or fork of your bicycle will affect the steering. A heavy load can make turning the handlebar slow, difficult, or unpredictable, which could cause you to lose control and crash. To avoid problems, make the load safe:
· Do not place loads in a front basket that weigh more than 22 lbs (10 kg).
· Balance the load side-to-side.
· Secure the load so that it cannot move.
· Do not put children or pets in the basket.
· Make sure no part of the load can get into the wheel.

Inspection

Once a month, make sure all the fasteners holding the rack or basket are tightened to the correct torque. Check the bolts holding the rack or basket to the frame or fork. When properly attached and adjusted, the rack or basket should not wiggle or be loose, and the top surface of the rack or basket should be close to level.

Adjustment

To adjust the position of the rack or basket, slightly loosen the bolts holding the struts to the rack or basket. Slide the struts in or out until you achieve the desired position, and re-tighten the bolts.

If you cannot position the rack or basket to your satisfaction, consult your dealer.
