The handlebar is the part of the bicycle you hold. The stem (Figure 1) attaches the handlebar to the fork. Together, they let you steer and control the bicycle. In addition, the stem works with the handlebar to define your position on the bicycle. Information on proper positioning of the parts is found in the section Fitting the bicycle.

Some bicycles have handlebar extensions, extra handles integral or clamped to a standard handlebar.

Each of these items requires maintenance to be safe.
