Chapter 1: Guide to safe On- and off-road operation

Training wheels

Some models of Trek bicycles come equipped with training wheels. As your child learns to ride a bicycle with training wheels, make sure the child has the skills necessary to stop the bicycle. Until this skill is mastered, the child must never ride the bicycle without supervision.

Warning—Training wheels prevent the normal inward lean of a bicycle during a turn. If the bicycle is turned too quickly, the bicycle may tip over, resulting in an accident. With training wheels, do not ride fast or turn sharply.

Inspection

Once a month, make sure all the nuts holding the rear wheel, and thus the training wheels, are tight. Check that when the bicycle is standing straight, the clearance between the training wheels and the ground are the same on both the left and right sides.

Adjustment

The training wheels may be moved up and down to adjust the clearance between the wheels and the ground, and to promote the learning of skills such as balancing and turning.

To adjust the training wheels

1. Check that the tires of the bicycle are correctly inflated.

2. Place the bicycle on a flat, smooth surface.

3. Loosen the rear axle nuts. Follow the procedures in the Drivetrain section of Chapter 3.

4. Stand the bicycle up very straight, and set a gap of about 1/4 inch (6mm) between the training wheels and the ground on both sides of the bicycle Figure 1). Make sure the gap is the same on both sides.

5. Re-tighten the axle nuts as shown in the bolt-on wheel installation section, including adjusting the chain tension and inspecting the wheel attachment.

Re-adjust as the child's skill level grows

As the child’s skill level grows, you may gradually increase the clearance between the training wheels and the ground until the child no longer requires the training wheels.

Lubrication

The training wheels do not normally require lubrication.
