Flatbar brake levers (Figure 1) are those levers that fit and work on a handlebar that is flat or styled for mountain bikes. The other type of brake levers are designed to work on a handlebar that is dropped or styled for road bikes.
If your bicycle is equipped with brake levers offering adjustable braking force, read and follow the manufacturers instructions supplied with your bicycle before making any adjustment to the braking force.

Every 3 months tighten the bolts on the brake levers to the torque specifications.
With some brake levers, you can change the reach, the distance from the handlebar to the lever.
1. Locate the reach adjustment screw (Figure 1) and turn. To increase the reach, turn the screw in (clockwise). To reduce the reach, turn the screw out (counter-clockwise).
2. If needed after adjusting the reach, re-adjust the pad clearance.
1. Turn the barrel adjuster.
To increase the pad clearance, turn the barrel adjuster in (clockwise). To reduce the pad clearance, turn the barrel adjuster out (counter-clockwise). For most caliper systems, the barrel adjuster is on the brake itself.
2. If the brake pads cannot be adjusted properly in this manner, loosen the cable clamp bolt and re-attach the cable as explained in Brake cable installation, but without removing the brake cable.
Every 3 months lubricate your brake lever pivots with SynLube or a similar light oil.
