Chapter 3: inspection, adjustment, and lubrication

Brake system

These instructions explain how to inspect, adjust, and lubricate a bicycle brake system. Read the Warning about Mechanical Work before performing any service work on your bicycle.

Brakes are important for safety

The brake system allows you to slow or stop your bicycle, a function critical to your safety. Many brake systems slow the bicycle by applying pressure to the rim, making the rim part of the braking system. As part of a brake system inspection, also inspect the rim. Brake designs have varying amounts of stopping power. If you are dissatisfied, or uncomfortable, with the stopping power of your bicycle brakes, consult your Trek dealer.

With any braking system, failure to properly adjust, maintain, and use your brakes may result in a loss of control and injury. If you are unsure of the brake adjustment, or suspect any problem, do not ride your bicycle; have your Trek dealer service your bicycle.

Warning—Never ride a bicycle if you are not certain the brakes are working properly, or if you suspect a problem with the brake cables. Malfunctioning brakes can cause you to lose control and fall. If your brakes are not working properly, re-adjust them or take the bicycle to your Trek dealer for service.

Brake Levers are part of the Brake System

With most bicycles the left brake lever controls the front wheel brake and the right brake lever controls the rear wheel brake. However, the brake levers can be switched for some countries or for a person with special needs.

The brake system is difficult to adjust properly without the proper tools and training. It is strongly recommended that adjustment of a brake be done by your Trek dealer. If you need more specific information regarding your brake system, contact your Trek dealer.

Do not modify brakes or their parts

Some types of brakes are not compatible with some types of brake levers because the rate of cable pull changes the power of the brakes. With any brake, use only levers recognized as compatible, such as those supplied with your bicycle.

Do not modify your brakes. Use the type and brand of brake pad that came with the brakes.

Types of brakes

There are a variety of brake systems on Trek bicycles, and some brake systems include extra components like a rotor. Some bicycle models combine different types of brakes. Read about your braking system by selecting the type(s) of brake system components on your bicycle:
