i-Motion 9 shift system

The i-Motion 9 shift system consists of those parts of the bicycle which allow you to shift gears including the shifter, rear hub, and shift cable.  These instructions explain how to inspect, adjust, and lubricate the internal-shifting rear hub portion of the i-Motion 9 shift system with its twist-type shifter (Figure 1). Read the Warning About Mechanical Work before performing any service work on your bicycle.

Also refer to the manufacturer's owner's manuals.

Inspection

A properly adjusted shift system is quiet. If an unusual noise follows any shift, or while pedaling, your shift cable may need to be adjusted. If after adjustment the noise persists or grows louder, stop the bicycle and try to locate the noise. If necessary, ask your Trek dealer to identify and correct any problems. For more information about your shift system consult your Trek dealer.

Once a month, make sure the hub gears are properly adjusted. Twist the shifter to a different gear, then back again. If the hub does not shift smoothly in both directions, either follow the instructions to adjust the shifting or take your bicycle to your Trek dealer for service.

Once a month, check the shift cable for kinks, rust, broken strands, or frayed ends. Also check the housing for bent ends, cuts, broken coils and wear. If you suspect a problem with your shift cable, do not ride your bicycle. Replace the cable and/or housing before riding your bicycle by following these instructions, or take your bike to your Trek dealer for service.

Adjustment

To adjust the rear hub shifting

1. Shift the twist shifter from the 7th gear to the 6th gear.

2. Turn the barrel adjuster until the yellow / red marks  in the window of the gear hub (Figure 2) are aligned.

Note: You can use either of  the barrel adjusters: the barrel adjuster on the shifter or the barrel adjuster on the connecting tube (Figure 3).

To remove the rear wheel

1. Shift the twist shifter to the 1st gear.

2. On the connecting tube, slide the quick disconnect  to the right.

3. Disconnect by removing the connecting tube downward.

4. Loosen the axle nuts and remove the nuts and the retaining washers underneath them (Figure 4).

5.  If applicable, unscrew the brake-arm bolt that holds the brake arm clamp (Figure 4).

5. Remove the rear wheel.

To install the rear wheel

1. Place the rear wheel into the frame.

2. Slide one retaining washer  onto each axle end.

Note: The serrations of the retaining washer must bear against the dropout of the frame. Retaining washers with existing lugs must engage in the dropout of the frame.

3. Install the axle nuts  and tighten to the torque specifications.

4. For a bike with a coaster brake, place the brake arm between the  straps of the frame clamp.

Note: The frame clamp must be seated on the frame with no play. Use only self-locking nuts.

5. Install the brake-arm bolt and tighten to the torque specifications.

6.  Make sure that the shifter is set to the 1st gear.

7. On the connecting tube, slide the quick disconnect  to the right. The opening should now be visible.

8. Make the connection by sliding the opening of the connecting tube onto the catch on the hub.

9. Slide the quick disconnect on the connecting tube to the left until it snaps into place. The connection is now locked.

10. Inspect the shifting and inspect the brake before riding.

Lubrication

The i-Motion 9 rear hub bearings are designed to be permanently lubricated under normal use.

Whenever you replace a cable, lubricate the cable with synthetic chain lube or a similar lubricant.
