Chapter 3: Overview of
inspection, adjustment, and lubrication

This chapter gives instructions for inspection, adjustment, and lubrication of the parts of a bicycle.

for experienced mechanics only

These instructions are written for a person familiar with mechanics and with proper tools. Because your safety depends on the correct maintenance of your bicycle, we recommend you have your dealer service your bicycle.

Warning—A bicycle that malfunctions can cause you to lose control and fall. Inspect the entire bicycle thoroughly before every ride, and do not ride it until any problem has been corrected. Read the Warning about Mechanical Work before performing any service work on your bicycle.

After a repair, examine your bicycle as shown in the Before Every Ride checklist. If your frame, fork, or part does not pass an inspection, do not ride your bicycle. Either repair or replace the part, or take your bicycle to your Trek dealer for service. If any part on the bicycle is worn, corroded, rusted, loose, or damaged in any other way, replace the part.

Torque Specifications

Many parts on a bicycle are attached with threaded fasteners, such as screws or bolts. Threaded fasteners must be correctly lubricated and tightened to properly secure a part and avoid damage. This manual lists the correct tightness of a threaded fastener as a torque specification. Before attempting to perform any service on this bicycle, read about torque.
