Chapter 3: inspection, adjustment, and lubrication

Wheel installation with quick-release

These instructions explain how to remove and install a wheel with a traditional or Clix quick-release mechanism. The instructions are separated by removal and installation, and also by front and rear wheel. To remove or install a wheel with an ABP system, see the ABP Overview.

Begin by opening the brake type(s) on your bicycle:

· Caliper brake

· Cantilever brake

· Direct-pull, or 'V', brake

· Disc brakes

Front wheel

To remove a front wheel

1. Open the wheel quick-release.

2. Loosen the quick-release adjusting nut three full turns.

With an QR15 system, you must completely remove the skewer from the hub.

3. Slide the wheel out of the dropouts.

To install a front wheel

1. Place the wheel in the fork, making sure that the axle is inserted all the way into the dropouts.

With an QR15 system, you must reinstall the skewer through the hub.

2. Re-install and adjust the quick-release.

3. Inspect the wheel attachment.

If that wasn't clear, watch the movie.

Rear wheel

To remove a rear wheel

1. Shift to the smallest rear cog.

2. Open the wheel quick-release.

With an ABP system, you must completely unthread the skewer from the adjusting nut, and remove the skewer or axle from the hub.

3. Hold the derailleur cage with your thumb (Figure 1), and unwind the derailleur cage (Figure 2).

4. Slide the wheel out of the dropouts.

If that wasn't clear, watch the movie.

2. Place the wheel in the frame, making sure that the axle is inserted all the way into the dropouts.

With an ABP system, you must reinstall the skewer through the hub.

3. Close the quick-release.

4. Inspect the wheel attachment.

If that wasn't clear, watch the movie.
